Someone recently wrote this to me in an e-mail message:

I responded:

But, to the contrary, when someone celebrates their 40th (or 50th, etc.) birthday or wedding anniversary, do they do it at the beginning of the 40th year, or do they wait until the day that begins the 41st year? The latter, I think. For example, if I were born on 6 December, 1957, I would normally celebrate my 40th birthday on 6 December, 1997, which is the day that I both complete the 40th year and begin the 41st. So to apply this analogy, to celebrate the 2000th year in a similar manner, you would celebrate at midnight on 31 December, 2000! Think about it...I'm pretty sure this is good logic. :-)
